چکیده

I study large random assignment economies with a continuum of agents and a …nite number of object types. I consider the existence of weak priorities discriminating among agents with respect to their rights concerning the …nal assignment. The respect for priorities ex ante (ex-ante stability) usually precludes ex-ante envy-freeness. Therefore I de…ne a new concept of fairness, called no unjusti…ed lower chances: priorities with respect to one object type cannot justify di¤erent achievable chances regarding another object type. This concept, which applies to the assignment mechanism rather than to the assignment itself, implies ex-ante envy-freeness among agents of the same priority type. I propose a variation of Hylland and Zeckhauser’s (1979) pseudomarket that meets ex-ante stability, no unjusti…ed lower chances and ex-ante e¢ ciency among agents of the same priority type. Assuming enough richness in preferences and priorities, the converse is also true: any random assignment with these properties could be achieved through an equilibrium in a pseudomarket with priorities. If priorities are acyclical (the ordering [email protected]. Sequential Pseudomarkets and the Weak Core in Random Assignments

We study random assignment economies with expectedutility agents, each of them eventually obtaining a single object. Sequential Pseudomarkets: Welfare Economics in Random Assignment Economies

We study random assignment economies with expectedutility agents, each of them eventually obtaining a single object. Inspired on Hylland and Zeckhauser’s (1979) Pseudomarket mechanism (PM) and on a serial dictatorship, we introduce the Sequential Pseudomarket (SP) where groups of agents are called turn by turn and participate in a pseudomarket for the remaining objects. To measure e¢ ciency, we...

Competitive Equilibrium from Equal Incomes for Two-Sided Matching

Using the assignment of students to schools as our leading example, we study many-to-one two-sided matching markets without transfers. Students are endowed with cardinal preferences and schools with ordinal ones, while preferences of both sides need not be strict. Using the idea of a competitive equilibrium from equal incomes (CEEI, Hylland and Zeckhauser (1979)), we propose a new mechanism, th...

Large vs. Continuum Assignment Economies

Continuum models are often used to study large finite assignment economies. We show that in the canonical assignment problem without transfers, the continuum model can have very different qualitative properties than large finite markets. The problem is driven by the failure of local non-satiation inherent in no-transfer assignment.

Probit-Based Traffic Assignment: A Comparative Study between Link-Based Simulation Algorithm and Path-Based Assignment and Generalization to Random-Coefficient Approach

Probabilistic approach of traffic assignment has been primarily developed to provide a more realistic and flexible theoretical framework to represent traveler’s route choice behavior in a transportation network. The problem of path overlapping in network modelling has been one of the main issues to be tackled. Due to its flexible covariance structure, probit model can adequately address the pro...
